Vodafone and Ericsson develop energy-saving 5G units

Vodafone and Ericsson have installed their first low-power consumption 5G unit, finding that it decreased energy consumption by a daily average of 43%.

Vodafone will deploy 1,500 of these units by April 2022 in line with its goal to be net-zero in the UK by 2027.

Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone UK, said: “Our strategy is to turn off anything we don’t need, modernise our network where possible, and use the most energy-efficient options available without compromising the service.”

The first low-power consumption unit was installed on the roof of Vodafone’s Speechmark Office in Southwark, reducing consumption by up to 55% at peak times.
