UK SMEs lacking adequate cyber protection, says BT

BT research reveals that over 51% of microbusinesses lack adequate cyber protection and are relying on security products designed to protect consumers rather than businesses.

The research also found 4% of SME businesses aren’t using any cyber protection at all, with this figure rising to (17%) for microbusinesses. Complacency is also a worry as 55% of SMEs lacking cyber protection believe their business isn’t big enough to be targeted.

Chris Sims, MD for BT’s SoHo Unit, said: “There has been a huge shift over the past two years in the number of small firms moving their business online.

“Whilst that’s a really encouraging trend, being an online business can bring challenges around cyber security. It’s clear that the UK’s smallest firms need more support in this area.”

In response to this BT is launching new free cyber security tools for its BT business broadband customers and is offering free online advice to help upskill small businesses.

BT is offering BT Content Control and BT Web Protect as standard with their BT business broadband as well as Business Antivirus Protection provided by McAfee.
