Dave McGinn CEO SME, at Daisy, has successfully completed one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges after months of cold-water training, early mornings, and sheer determination, tackling a relay swim across the English Channel and raising vital funds for national spinal injury charity, Aspire.
Alongside five teammates, McGinn braved sub-17°C waters without a wetsuit, jellyfish stings, unpredictable tides, and the constant threat of exhaustion in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
Each swimmer took turns completing hour-long stints in the water before reaching the French coast in an impressive 12 hours and 26 minutes, far ahead of their predicted time of over 14 hours.
“The Channel tested us physically and mentally,” McGinn said.
“From battling waves to a seal that followed us for hours, it was as much about resilience and teamwork as it was about swimming. But every stroke was worth it, knowing it would help Aspire continue its life-changing work for people with spinal injuries.”
Aspire provides housing, equipment, and essential support for individuals living with spinal cord injuries, enabling them to live independently.
The CEO has been fundraising through his JustGiving page, where supporters have been donating before, during, and after the swim and he is now approaching a £5,000 marker.
The original swim date was postponed due to poor weather, the team had to restart after a choppy night attempt, and navigating the Channel’s shipping lanes felt, in McGinn’s words, “like crossing the M25 on a scooter during rush hour”.
Despite these challenges, the team’s spirits remained high, fuelled by flapjacks, camaraderie, and the sight of the French coast drawing nearer with each leg.
McGinn is already considering his next challenge, with a marathon and maybe even one on roller skates on the horizon! But for now, he’s taking a moment to reflect on the achievement.
“Completing the Channel was exhausting but unforgettable. The support from friends, family, and the local community has been incredible. I’m so grateful for everyone who’s donated, encouraged, and followed the journey.”
